Trojans rally to edge Pointers in OVC

SOUTH POINT — It was a tough game that resulted in a tough loss.

Douglas Shaffer turned in a solid pitching performance but the Portsmouth Trojans scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to beat the South Point Pointers 5-3 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Shaffer gave up seven hits, struck out two, walked one and only two runs were earned.

Portsmouth’s Zach Delotell also pitched well as he got the complete game win. He allowed five hits, struck out six, walked two and none of the runs were unearned.

The Trojans went up 1-0 in the second inning when Ty Oliver singled and Blake Wedebrook and Ryan Williams reached on errors.

The Pointers rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Tanner Hall was safe on an error, Drew Adams singled, Justin Taylor hit into a fielder’s choice, Shaffer had an RBI single and Chris Woodard and Jonathan Henline reached on errors.

Portsmouth tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Williams walked, Mikey Potts was hit by a pitch and Dylan Mullins had an RBI single. Delotell hit into a fielder’s choice to score the tying run.

After the Pointers left two runners on in the sixth, the Trojans scored twice in the seventh.

Mullins singled with one out and Delotell and Reese Johnson were safe on an errors.

Brandon Layne was 2-4 to lead the Pointers. Mullins was 3-4 and Oliver 2-4 for Portsmouth.

South Point hosts Ironton on Monday in a league game.
