Officer administered Narcan to man in SUV

CHESAPEAKE — Chesapeake police and Lawrence County EMS responded on Tuesday to a suspected overdose.

According to a police report, Patrolman Lukas Morris arrived on the scene in the alley beside Dave’s Auto Sales at 7 p.m.

Morris said he found a man passed out behind the wheel of an SUV, with his foot on the brake and his vehicle still in drive.

The man was unresponsive and pale white, with purple lips, Morris said. He immediately radioed dispatch for EMS and fire crews, who arrived on the scene six minutes later.

Morris said, while waiting, he and a female leaned the man’s seat back, felt for a pulse and tilted his head back to open his airway.

Morris said he had to assist the EMS worker in moving the man to a gurney, as he was 6 feet tall, weighed about 200 pounds and was too large for a single person to lift.

While moving the man, Morris said he began to regain consciousness and ripped the door panel off the front driver side door.

Morris said the man became unresponsive again after being strapped to the gurney.

The squad then gave the man two doses of Narcan, but he was still unresponsive and had to be intubated.

After the tube was inserted, the man became combative, Morris said he had to restrain him to keep him from fighting EMS workers or removing the tubes. After the man was subdued, he was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Morris said he got permission from the man’s father to search his SUV.

Morris was on his way to testify at a special meeting of village council when he got the call.
