Moscot solid in first start but Reds lose

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cincinnati’s Jon Moscot first start of the season did not turn out the way he visualized it.
Moscot gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings Sunday and did not get a decision in the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Moscot had been on the disabled list due to a strained left intercostal muscle and had not started since June 15 at Detroit. He disclocated his non-throwing left shoulder in a collision during a rundown and spent the rest of the season on the disabled list.
“I’ve lied in bed at night dreaming about this stuff,” Moscot said. “It’s been going through my head for a while.”
Moscot gave up two solo home runs in just his fourth career start, to Jedd Gyorko in the second and Matt Carpenter in the fifth.
“They’re a good hitting ballclub,” Moscot said. “They’ve been swatting the ball pretty well.”
Cincinnati manager Bryan Price liked what he saw from Moscot.
“He did a nice job. He’s stretched and ready to go and he gives us a shot of life in the rotation, which is terrific,” Price said. “I’m happy to see him back out on the field after all this time off after that injury in Detroit last year.”
Eric Fryer had three hits, including the go-ahead double with two outs in the eighth inning for the Cardinals. A backup to All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, Fryer got his first start this season and is 6 for 6 at the plate.
St. Louis has won three of last four. The Reds have lost five of six.
Kevin Siegrist (2-0) entered with a runner at second and two outs in the seventh, struck out Zack Cozart and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, fanning two more. Trevor Rosenthal struck out his last two batters in a perfect ninth for his third save in as many chances.
With the score 3-all, Ross Ohlendorf (2-1) walked pinch-hitter Aledmys Diaz leading off, and Diaz scored on Fryer’s double.
