GALLIPOLIS — It was a double disappointment.

Ironton saw a chance to win their suspended game slip away, then fell behind early in the second game and couldn’t rally as the Fighting Tigers lost 8-7 in 10 innings and 9-4 to the Gallipolis Blue Devils on Monday.

The teams began a game on April 1 at Ironton but Gallipolis arrived late and the game was suspended due to darkness with the score tied 5-5 after seven innings.

The teams picked up at that point on Monday and each team scored twice in the ninth inning before the Blue Devils got a run in the 10th.

In the ninth, Ryan Terry reached on an error and Marcus Moore, John Stout and Kole Carter all singled.

Ironton (9-4, 5-3) tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Garrett Carrico walked, Hunter Klabier reached on an error, Larry Morris was intentionally walked, Ethan Duncan hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored and Kyle Kleinman was safe on an error for the tying run.

Gallipolis got the winning run after two outs. Terry walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and Braden Simms had an RBI single.

“Our kids kept battling back but fell short in the 10th. We definitely have some adjustments to make and improve on a few of our deficit areas,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin.

In the regularly scheduled game, Gallipolis got three runs in the first inning.

Carter doubled, Bailey reached on an error, and Anthony Sipple and Ward were hit by pitches to score a run. Jeremy Brumfield followed with a two-run single.

Ironton tied the game in the second on singles by Kleinman, Duncan and Thomas and a two-run double by Dane Wilson.

But Gallipolis got the runs back in the bottom of the inning.

Bailey and Sipple walked, Ward was hit by a pitch, Terry singled home two runs and the third run scored on an overthrow back into the infield.

“They jumped out to an early lead that we could not recover from,” said Goodwin.

The Blue Devils got two runs in the fourth on a hit by Sipple, an error and a groundout.

Ironton scored a run in the sixth on singles by Carrico, Hunter Klaiber and Duncan.

Gallipolis added a run in the bottom of the inning on a hit by Sipple, a walk to Ward, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.

The Blue Devils are 10-6 and lead the OVC at 7-1.

Ironton visits Fairland on Wednesday.
