Flyers roll past Royals

ASHLAND, Ky. — The St. Joseph Flyers were coming from both sides of the plate.

Tyler Ward pitched a four-hitter and the Flyers cranked out 21 hits as they beat the Rose Hill Royals 15-2 in five innings on Monday.

“We hit the ball well all through the lineup,” said Flyers’ coach Lou Mains. “Tyler Ward pitched well. He had good control and threw strikes.”

Ward struck out nine and walked only one to get the win.

On the offensive end, the Flyers were led by Seth Kelly who went 4-5 with six runs batted in and a double.

Chase Walters and Zach McGraw each went 3-4 with an RBI, Isaac Whaley was 3-5 with a double, Ward 2-3 with three RBIs, Payton Adkins 2-3 and an RBI James Carter 2-4 and an RBI and Brad Rist 1-1.

The Flyers erupted for eight runs in the first inning.

Whaley opened the game with a double and Kelly, Walters and McGraw all got base hits. Ward doubled and Clay Willis, Adkins and Carter all singled. Butler then walked and Kelly capped the rally with a two-run single.

The Flyers scored five times in the third to lead 13-0.

Adkins singled, Carter reached on an error and Whaley singled in a run. Kelly then doubled home two runs and Walters and McGraw had RBI singles.

St. Joseph added a run in the fourth when Whaley singled, Gage Butler reached on an error, and Kelly and Walters singled.

The final runs scored in the fifth on singled by Adkins and Carter and two errors.

Rose Hill got its two runs in the fifth.

Ethan Hamilton singled, John Barber reached on an error, Jordan Lucas singled, Nathan Hamilton walked and Bryce DePriest had a base hit.

St. Joseph visits Portsmouth Notre Dame on Tuesday.
