Virginia Eldridge

Virginia (Jenny, Ginny) Eldridge, beloved mother, and longtime resident of Ironton, Ohio, passed away on May 1, 2016 at the age of 78.

Virginia was preceded in death by her son, James (Jim) Maynard; her father, Elliot Eldridge; her mother, Sophia (Bundy) Eldridge; and her sisters, Betty Beasley and Jean King.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Dr. Deborah Taylor and her husband, Jonathan; and two grandsons, Graham Taylor and Raymond Taylor, all of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by her sisters, Eileen Bishop of Ironton, and Gwen Deer of Waverly, and her brother, William Eldridge, of Flint, Michigan.

Virginia worked at the Ironton Tribune for many years and enjoyed working with the public. She was a 1956 graduate of Ironton High School and attended the Apostolic Gospel Church. She loved music and singing in the church choir. The family would like to thank the staff of the Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley for their love, support, and care these past few years.

Gene Barrett

Aug. 1, 1929 – May 1, 2016

Gene Barrett, 86, of Franklin Furnace, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Crystal Care Center in Franklin Furnace. He was born August 1, 1929 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Glenn Burton Barrett and Mildred Ora Scott Barrett Klever.

Gene was the retired  superintendent for the Green Township local schools, having served in that position for 26 years, and also an Army veteran of the Korean War. A 1947 graduate of Clay High School, he received a Bachelors of education degree from Ohio University and a masters of mathematics and a masters of school administration from the University of Illinois. Gene also served as an adjunct professor of mathematics at Shawnee State University. He was a member of the Ohio Education Association and was also an avid golfer and of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death March 16, 2014 by his wife, Roberta Jane Fabian Barrett, whom he married in Shamokin, PA on March 20, 1954.

Surviving Gene are two sons: James Robert (Angie) Barrett of Ashland, and Glenn Scott Barrett (Jane) Barrett of Franklin Furnace; two daughters, Julie Ann (Dean) Otworth of Hillsboro and Jennifer Lee (Jeff) Cunningham of Franklin Furnace; one brother, Gary Lee Barrett of Santa Rosa, CA; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Gene was also preceded in death by two sisters; Judith Ann Wilkinson and Penny Barrett.

Funeral services will be held  11 A.M. Wednesday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth where the family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour. Rev. James R. Barrett will officiate the services with burial following in Haverhill Cemetery. James Dickey Post 23 of the American Legion will conduct military graveside honors.

Stanley Diehl

Stanley Martin Diehl, 83, of Barboursville, WV, died Saturday April 30, 2016 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington.  He is survived by his wife Edna Diehl.

Funeral service will be conducted noon Tuesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio. Entombment will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday at the funeral home.  Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.

 

 

Mary Canaday

Mary Marie Canaday, 64, of Proctorville, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
