James Patton

June 1, 1941 — May 2, 2016

James Cleveland “Tooter” Patton, 74, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Mr. Patton was born June 1, 1941, in Garrett, Kentucky, a son of the late James and Maggie Tussey Patton. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Nero Patton, Arnold Patton and Okie Watkins; and sister, Dessie Fulk.

Tooter retired from the meat cutting business with over 35 years of service and worked for Riverway North & South Coal Dock as an equipment operator. He was a member of Bridges Christian Church and was an avid fisherman. He coached Boyd County Babe Ruth Baseball, loved his pets, loved the outdoors, but his granddaughter was the love of his life. He always had a way of putting a smile on your face with a good joke. Tooter will be deeply missed. Survivors include his son, James L. Patton, of Flatwoods, Kentucky; daughter, Tina Patton (Gary Dillon), of Coal Grove; brothers, Willie Patton, of Floyd County, Kentucky, Gary Patton, of Coal Grove, and John Patton, of Flatwoods, Kentucky; sisters, Imogene Minnihan, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, and Jodi Selvage, of Flatwoods, Kentucky; his granddaughter, Autumn Patton; the mother of his children, Sandy Patton (Tony Walker), of Ashland, Kentucky; and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bridges Christian Church in Russell. Thorny Artrip will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Church. Burial will be in the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society, 4324 13th Street, Ashland, KY 41102 are suggested. Carolyn Spears

March 23, 1948 — May 4, 2016

Carolyn Sue Spears, 68, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at her residence. The Ironton native was born March 23, 1948, a daughter of the late Holden D. and Estyle Hunt Smith. Carolyn attended Ironton High School, was of the Baptist faith and a former employee for Jo-Lin Health Center in Ironton, retiring in 2013 after 32 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Tammy Sue Watson and Debra Messenger; a grandson, Robert “Cody” Williams; a granddaughter, Kayla Schwab; a brother, Jerry Lee Sites; and a sister, Betty Sanders.

She is survived by her ex-husband, Charles “Sonny” Spears, of Ironton; two sons, Justin Spears and Robert (Tricia) Messenger, all of Ironton; a daughter, Tina (Darrell) Schwab, of Kitts Hill; two stepdaughters, Charla (Steve) Nelson, of Russell, Kentucky, and Dreama (Jay) Wilder, of Ironton; two brothers, Doug Smith, of Franklin Furnace, and Jimmy Ray Smith, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Woodland Cemetery with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Wanda Daniel

Wanda Marcella Daniel, 93, of South Point, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at her residence. A celebration of Wanda’s life will be 6:30 p.m. today at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, with pastor Paul Michael Booth officiating. Burial will be in the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Elmer VanKuren, 80, of Proctorville, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Madison Park, Huntington, West Virginia. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.

 

Anita Collins

Anita Jo Collins, 54, of Kitts Hill, died Monday, May 2, 2016, at the Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland. She is survived by her husband, Rodney Collins. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ross Cemetery, Kitts Hill, with pastor Jeff Cremeans officiating. Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.
