5th inning outburst gives Redwomen win
CHESAPEAKE — The Five at five is not just a talk show on Fox News.
The Rock Hill Redwomen scored five runs in the fifth inning as they blanked the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 5-0 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
The game was scoreless until Rock Hill broke through in the fifth inning.
“It took us a little while to get our bats going,” said Rock Hill coach Sam Gue.
“Anna (Darby) got us going with an infield hit to start the fifth. Jenna, Lily and Maddie all had multiple hits for us and all three came through in big situations.”
Darby led off the fifth inning with her infield single. Kaci Russell reached on an overthrow at first base and it allowed Darby to score and Russell to reach third.
Jenna Lane singled home Russell and Hairston reached on an error. Makenzi Harrah followed with a double to score a run, Riann Keating hit a sacrifice fly and Lily McGinnis capped the rally with an RBI single.
Hairston got the win as she allowed just four hits, struck out four and walked one.
“Fortunately for us, Jill was able to establish pretty good command of the zone and our defense made plays,” said Gue.
“Kaci had several putouts at shortstop. Her athleticism is key for us on the defensive side.”
Lane went 3-4 while McGinnis and Harper went 2-3 each for Rock Hill (19-1, 12-0).
Brooke Webb went 5.2 innings and took the loss. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Melanie Noble finished and struck out three in 1.1 innings without a walk.
