CG girls outscore Fairland

PROCTORVILLE — There were plenty of hits and plenty of runs, and the Coal Grove Lady Hornets got more than their fair share.

Coal Grove collected 17 hits en route to a 13-8 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday over the Fairland Lady Dragons.

Fairland had 13 hits but the Lady Hornets scored five runs over the final two innings to snap a tie and get the win.

Coal Grove took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Gracie Riley walked, Kasey Murphy was hit by a pitch and Lauren Crum walked to load the bases. McKenzie Moore hit a sacrifice fly and Khylee Keaton singled in a run.

Fairland rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning.

Allison Shepherd reached on an error and Morgan Fridley singled and Maddie Kazee grounded out as a run scored.

Emily Chapman singled for a run and Hollyann Lunsford followed with an RBI triple.

Coal Grove rallied to take a 6-3 lead in the top of the second.

Shelby Zerkle and Riley walked and Murphy doubled home a run. Crum then cranked a three-run homer.

Fairland came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Mollie Morris walked, Shepherd singled and Fridley tripled.

The Lady Hornets went up 8-5 in the fourth.

Murphy walked and Crum and Keaton singled for a run. Delaney Napier Emily Keeney singled to score the other run.

The Lady Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Morris tripled and Fridley singled her home. Kazee doubled and Chapman had a run-scoring single. Lunsford tripled again to score Kazee but Chapman was thrown out at home.

Coal Grove took the lead with a run in the sixth when Moore and Keaton singled, Kenney walked and Zerkle singled in the run.

The Lady Hornets added four insurance runs in the seventh.

Riley, Murphy and Crum all singled for a run. Keaton singled in a run and Napier doubled home another. Keeney, Zerkle and Shayna Byars all walked to force home two runs.

In the Division III sectional tournament, Fairland visits South Point at 5 p.m. on Tuesday while Coal Grove travels to Ironton at 5 p.m. on Friday.
