No excuses. It was just a bad day.

Nothing worked for the Ironton Fighting Tigers in an 11-2 Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Portsmouth Trojans on Monday.

Ironton had just three hits, committed three errors and gave Portsmouth 10 baserunners: six walks and four hit batsmen.

“We just did not play well in any facet of the game. Pitching, hitting, fielding, baserunning were all sub-par,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin.

“We will keep working and come back Wednesday ready to play.”

Ironton hosts Nelsonville-York at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

Two walks and a single by Dylan Mullins gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Singles by Ty Oliver, Reese Johnson and Mullins with a hit batsman and a walk gave Portsmouth two more runs in the third.

Ironton cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth when Bryce Thomas and Garrett Carrico walked and Jake Isaac reached on an error.

Portsmouth got four runs in the fifth to lead 7-1 on three walks, two hit batters and a double by Ryan Williams.

Ironton got its other run in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Kleinman and Larry Morris both reached on errors.

Singles by Mullins Vincent Schwamberger and Blake Wedebrook plus a hit batter and an error gave the Trojans their final four runs in the sixth.

Mason Slagel, Ethan Duncan and Kleinman had hits for Ironton.
