SP relay, Patterson head to state meet

ATHENS — It was a day for the Pointers.

The South Point Pointers’ 4×100-meter relay team along with Trent Patterson qualified on Saturday at the Division III regional track meet for next weekend’s state meet.

The top four finishers in the finals of each event advance to the state meet next weekend at Jesse Owens’ Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.

The Pointers’ 4×100-meter relay team punched its ticket to the state meet by placing fourth.

The team of seniors Trey and Trent Patterson and Stephen Wagoner and freshman Owen Chafin ran a 43.1 time in the finals. The quartet ran a 44.11 time in the preliminaries and were third overall.

Trent Patterson pulled double duty and qualified in the 200-meter dash finals as he finished second.

After posting a 22.65 seconds in the preliminaries for a third place finish, Patterson ran a 22.69 in the finals and placed second behind Maysville’s Chase Roberts who ran a 22.52.

The boys’ 4×100-meter dash preliminaries will be at 2:55 p.m. on Friday with finals set for 1:50 p.m. on Saturday.

The boys’ 200-meter dash preliminaries are at 3:50 p.m. on Friday and the finals will start at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Fairland junior Hunter Ashton finished seventh in the high jump as he cleared 6-2.

South Point senior Cole Christian was eighth in the shot put with a heave of 45-feet, almost three feet better than his district performance.
