Reception hosted for scholarship nominees

Recipient to be named at Ironton High graduation

An educational scholarship reception was hosted on May 13 by the Progressive Women’s Civic Club.

The event, which took place at Ohio University Southern in the Mains Rotunda, served as a reception for five nominees for a minority student scholarship, which will be awarded at Ironton High’s graduation today, Bonnie Holmes, the co-chair of the club said.

Angela Pleasant served as emcee of the event, and an invocation was delivered by the Rev. Margaret Tyson. Music was performed by Sharon Bradshaw and Ironton Mayor Katrina Keith was the speaker for the event.

The Progressive Women’s Civic Club was founded by Frances Washington and has been active in the community for decades with the mission to “promote interracial justice, understanding and peace among all people” to raise the standard of the home and “advance the moral, economic, social and religious welfare of the family.”

The $1,000 scholarship is named in her honor.
