An Ironton man who attacked a library employee asked the victim for forgiveness after admitting his guilt Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Seth Coleman, 22, of 918 Adams St., pleaded guilty to a second-degree count of felonious assault stemming from an incident on Jan. 15 in which he attacked a Briggs Library employee with a pair of scissors. A plea deal was made in the case and Coleman will be sentenced to five years in prison.

“He was very remorseful when he found out what he’d done,” Mike Mearan, Coleman’s attorney said, adding his client had smoked laced marijuana that day. “He’s very sorry to the victim in the case. … She’s a very strong lady.”

Mearan also said the incident was a result of Coleman not taking his medication.

Judge Charles Cooper set sentencing on Monday and set a $50,000 own-recognizance bond with GPS monitoring and house arrest. Coleman was ordered to stay away from the victim and the library.

“From the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry,” Coleman said to the victim, who was sitting in the courtroom. “Please forgive me.”

“Thank you, Seth,” she said. “Please get some help.”
