Judges are coming

It’s time to tidy up your neighborhoods because America In Bloom is on its way.

Judges from the national organization will visit Ironton on Monday and Tuesday to critique the city in many areas. But overall, what they are really looking to find is whether Ironton’s residents have community pride.

Do people care enough to pick up litter? Do people care enough to plant flowers in their yards and public spaces? Are there green spaces and trees?

While the judges may not know it yet, it will become clear when they visit that, yes, Ironton residents do have community pride and many have taken on the task of cleaning up the town and their neighborhoods.

Ironton In Bloom, a daughter organization of America In Bloom, is to be thanked for much of the beautification efforts the city has undergone since AIB made its first stop in Ironton in 2008.

Since then, trees have been planted, flower pots and hanging baskets have been installed and other improvements made.

AIB will judge the city on floral display, landscape, urban trees, environmental concerns, heritage and first impressions. They will visit several sites, like Woodland Cemetery and the schools and drive all over town.

They will probably drive down your street and pass by your home, so please take some time this weekend to check for litter or overgrown grass. A little bit of maintenance can go a long way in making a good impression.

Let’s show America In Bloom that Ironton has pride.
