Billie Shope

Feb. 9, 1930—June 16, 2016

Billie Jean Shope, 86, died peacefully, in the presence of her family, on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, following a brief illness. Billie was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Boyd County, Kentucky, the daughter of Otha Davidson and Allie Webb.

Billie graduated from Hanging Rock High School in 1949 and worked as a librarian at the Rock School District until her retirement in 1989.  She enjoyed crafting and sold many of her beautiful products. She also owned and worked in a greenhouse, and was a gifted painter.

On Dec. 13, 1950, Billie married the love of her life, the late Elroy Shope, who went to be with the Lord on July 14, 1999. They lived in Hanging Rock all of their lives in the house they built where they raised their two sons.

Billie was one of the oldest living members of the Nazarene Church in Hanging Rock. She had a lovely soprano voice and sang specials as well as singing in the choir. She also had served as director of Vacation Bible School.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Davidson and her brother, David Davidson.

She is survived by her brother Paul (Carolyn) Davidson, of Hanging Rock; her two  sisters, Janet Artis and Frances Hanners, of Haverhill; sons, Doug (Nancy) Shope, of Avoca, New York and Jim (Missy) Shope, of Hanging Rock; five grandchildren, Josiah Shope, of Corning, New York, Travis Shope, of Hanging Rock, Daniel Shope, of Big Flats, New York, Alex Shope, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina,  Laura Hall, of Hammondsport, New York; one great grandchild, Rosa Hall, of Hammondsport, New York; her beloved dog, Candy; a number of other relatives, close friends and special lifelong friends, Danny and Fern Wagner.

Visitation will be at the Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton, on Monday from noon until 1 p.m. A graveside service for family and friends will immediately follow at the Woodland Cemetery with pastor Andy Ramey officiating. Gale Brier

Sept. 21, 1938-June 16, 2016

Gale Winter Brier, 77, of South Point, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. The Middleboro, Massachusetts native was born Sept. 21, 1938, the son of the late Louis J. and Olive Mae Purington Brier. He is survived by his companion of 16 years, Janice Childers Poirier.

Mr. Brier attended the Governor John Carver School and was a self-employed bricklayer/mason. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carver, Massachusetts and a member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and art excellence.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his 11 brothers and six sisters.

In addition to his companion, he is survived by a daughter, Sherri Lee Brier, of Centralia, Washington; four brothers, Luther P. Brier, of Middleboro, Massachusetts, Louis J. Brier, of Whitman, Massachusetts, Timothy A. Brier, of Johnson Beach, Florida and Victor J. Brier, of Marion, Massachusetts; four sisters: Ramona Benson, of Alton, New Hampshire, Wanita Flynn, of Marlboro, Massachusetts, Dolores Musillo, of Middleboro, Massachusetts and Marina Silva, of New Bedford, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Dennis Brumfield Sr.

Dennis Paul Brumfield, Sr. 72, of Proctorville, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, at the VA Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Donna Brumfield. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Dean Desalvi, 48, of Franklin Furnace, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, at the Holzer Hospital of Jackson.
