It was part of the Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center’s “Christmas in July” series of events.

“We bake a lot at Christmas, so we’re doing this because it’s Christmas in July,” center director Darlene Green said.

Opal Cecil, a member of the center, assisted by her daughter-in-law Donna Cecil, taught the group how to make Butterfinger pies, using crushed up bits of the popular candy.

“You have a lot of stuff right now that uses Butterfingers,” Green said.

They doubled the recipe for more of the final product.

“I’m making two at one time,” she said. “I don’t normally do that.”

The preceding week, the seniors got a lesson in candy making, courtesy of Donna McClure and Janice Bills.

Green said there are two more events planned for the Christmas in July series.

On Friday, July 22, the center will host Christmas bingo, beginning at 11 a.m. And on Monday, July 25, they will host a Christmas dinner at noon, preceded by a meeting of their Bible study group at 10:45 a.m., where they will present the story of Christmas.

The senior center is located next to the Chesapeake Community Center on Ohio Route 7. All events are free and open to the public.
