Rally good for Ironton

When the motorcycles start roaring into town, that’s a good indication that it’s time for Rally on River.

The three-day event, hosted by the Friends of Ironton, kicks off tonight with live music and continues with many other events, including a car show, pig roast, poker run and military tribute.

This year marks the 13th year of the rally, which brings in thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to Ironton, some coming from the across the country, boosting the local economy and ushering in business for local retailers, restaurants and hotels.

But most importantly, the event’s main purpose is to raise money for the Ro-Na Theater, which used to be the crown jewel of Ironton’s downtown scene.

Since the Friends of Ironton began its restoration project, the old theater has undergone many changes, including a beautiful new marquee. What once was an unusable facility has transformed into multipurpose venue.

There is still a long way to go with the restoration, which is why an event of the rally’s magnitude is a good thing for the city of Ironton. It’s understandable not everyone will see the appeal of motorcycles and rock music, but many others do, and the Friends have done a great job organizing the event from year to year.

Likewise, Ironton Police officers, Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies and Ohio State Highway patrol officers have always stepped up their patrols to ensure visitors and locals are abiding by the law and ensuring public safety.

Thank you to all the volunteers who make Rally on the River a success each year. Hopefully 2016 will be the best yet.
