To be a good team, you’ve got to beat a good team.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers took a step toward being a good volleyball team with a season-opening win over the Jackson Ironladies on Monday.

Ironton swept Jackson 25-16, 25-19, 25-18.

The junior varsity also won, 13-25, 25-23 and 25-18.

“The girls have many goals set for the season and this was one on the list,” said Ironton coach Beth Campbell. “Jackson always has a great program ran by Jay Martin, so this was an exciting win for the team.

“Every team wants to get that first win to set a mark. But with that win, we still have lots of work to get done. Our game has lots of areas to improve on. The girls have put a lot of work in the off-season and they realize the hardest part of the job is slowly approaching.”

Ironton’s Zakia Lee led all scorers with 18 points including nine aces. She had 11 points in the first set.

Kenzie Cremeens had 13 points with five aces, Alli White seven points while D’Laynie Keith and Alyssa Lewis four each.

Lexi Wise had seven kills while Lewis racked up 18 assists. Lee had five blocks and three kills and Keith added four kills.

In the jayvee match, Ironton’s Shay Cox led all scorers with 12 points — six aces — while Demi Sands had seven points, Peighton Rowe four, and Lydia Hannan, Riley Schreck and McKenzie McMasters three points each.

Ironton host Minford at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and visits Coal Grove on Thursday in their Ohio Valley Conference opener.
