Dispose of tires properly

One the worst problems about the illegal dumping of trash in Lawrence County is the hundreds of used tires that are improperly discarded.

Typically, tire dumps are found off township and county roads, over hillsides and in the more desolate areas of the county. Often times, the tires aren’t discovered for weeks or months, after someone has made many trips to the site to unload.

Unfortunately, the cost of cleaning up a massive tire dump is high when you take into consideration the manpower needed to collect all the heavy tires and the fees of EPA-approved tire recycling facilities.

Thanks to a grant from the Ohio EPA, the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is having a tire amnesty day Friday at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

The event will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is free for county residents. Proof of residency must be presented and tires must be off the rim.

This is the second and last amnesty event this month, so if you didn’t make it to the first event in Ironton, please consider taking any used tires to the fairgrounds.

The solid waste district is making this completely free, and you don’t even have to get out of your vehicle to turn in the tires.

There is simply no excuse to not dispose of tires properly when the district is making it that easy to do.

It will help keep the county clean and it’s just the right thing to do.
