Trial set in rape case

Sky Lake case will get new trial date

 

A Chesapeake man charged with more than 50 counts of rape is set to go to trial on Sept 26.

Charles A. Ferris, 30, of 418 Second Ave., appeared in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday where a mental evaluation was put on the record. The man pleaded not guilty by reason on insanity at his arraignment, but his evaluation showed he is competent to stand trial.

Ferris is charged with 54 counts of first-degree rape of child. The dates included in his indictment range from October 2008, when the alleged victim was 2 years old, to June of this year, listing the alleged victim as 9 years old.

Judge Charles Cooper set another pretrial for Sept. 14.

A trial for defendants in the Sky Lake gambling case — Tracy Ellis, Loretta Akers and Laura Black — was vacated and has not yet been rescheduled. Another pretrial was set for Oct. 12.

In other cases:

• Christina Anderson, 37, of 45 Township Road 248 W., Kitts Hill, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree possession of drugs. Retired judge Richard Walton sentenced the woman to six months in prison and a six-month driver’s license suspension.

• Terry Crisp, 46, of 521 N. Sixth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to three fourth-degree counts of trafficking in drugs and one fifth-degree count of trafficking in drugs. Walton ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for Aug. 31.

• Richard Rife, 29, of 44 Private Drive 593 Township Road 218, Ironton, admitted community control sanctions violations and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

• Jackie Payne, 43, of 411 Walnut St., Ironton, was sentenced to four years CCS/ISP and $1,284 in restitution. She previously pleaded guilty to fifth-degree forgery and misdemeanor theft.

• Brandon Primm, 33, of 801 Little Solida Road, South Point, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree counts of possession of criminal tools and possession of marijuana. Walton ordered a PSI and set sentencing for Aug. 31.

• Lindsey Sharp, 59, of 4128 Township Road 216, Marnego, was arraigned on a bill of information of fourth-degree receiving stolen property, to which he pleaded guilty. Walton sentenced the man to nine months in prison.
