Harold Shafer

Oct. 16, 1946 — Sept. 11, 2016

Harold “Bucky” Shafer, 69, of Willow Wood, passed away and joined his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016. He was born Oct. 16, 1946, to the late William Harold and Marylene Shafer.

He retired as superintendent of the Lawrence County Educational Service Center after 42 years of service in education throughout the county. He was a member and served as Past Master and Secretary of Waterloo Masonic Lodge 532, and Past District Deputy of the 12th Masonic District. He was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, El Hasa Shriners and Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star 447. He served as Mason Township Trustee and served many people in his tax business.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Russell, and he enjoyed his family, his horses and farm and helping others. He leaves us rich in memories and blessed to have known him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Ralph and Pearl Brown; and his brother-in-law, Evan Wall. Bucky is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Janet Elaine Brown Shafer; a son, Duane (Stephanie) Shafer; a daughter, Delana Gates; grandchildren, Jarrett Shafer, Travis Gates, Katelin Shafer, Karissa Shafer, Hannah Gates and Grayden Shafer; a sister, Patty Wall; and several nieces, nephews, and special external family members.

Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Ken Gowin. Burial will follow at Perkins Ridge Cemetery. Friends may visit from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home with Masonic and Scottish Rite services to be conducted at 8 p.m. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.

 

Sherry McKinney-Massie

June 5, 1958 — Sept. 12, 2016

Sherry Lynn McKinney-Massie, 58, of Coal Grove, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Kentucky. The Ironton native was born June 5, 1958, a daughter of the late Conward and Edna Hollan McKinney. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Greg Massie, whom she married Dec. 15, 1989.

Sherry was a 1976 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and a former employee of Hills Department Store, Wal-Mart in Ashland, Kentucky, and Foodfair in Coal Grove. She loved to sew, work with her flowers and spend time with her grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, Sherry was also preceded in death by one brother, David McKinney; and two sisters, Freda Huddle and Wanda White.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their six children, William (Diane) Gibson, of Lexington, Kentucky, Shawna (TJ) Snell, of Coal Grove, Kalenia Massie, of Ashland, Kentucky, Kristin (Tyler) Roberts, of Summerville, South Carolina, Michael Massie, of Ashland, Kentucky, and Ryan (Sasha) Massie, of Coal Grove; nine grandchildren, Johnna, Kylei, Lyndsay, Braydon, Haleigh, Gavynn, Brandon, Nathaniel and Greyson; and three sisters, Sheila (Jim) Trout, of Ironton, Carol (Gary) Watton, of Sciotoville, and Kathy McKinney, of South Point.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. Brad Jenkins officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Leota Ann Copley Daniels, 84, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at Woodland Oaks Nursing Home, Ashland, Kentucky.
