John Smith

John Edward Smith, 97, of Ironton, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Sept. 16, 2016, at River Bend Nursing Home in South Point. The Charleston, West Virginia, native was born Aug. 29, 1919, a son to the late George Howard and Linnie (Hagger) Smith. John is survived by his wife, Sue Wooten-Smith.

Mr. Smith attended Ironton Schools. John later enlisted and served in the United States Army. He served with the 101st Air Born Screaming Eagles Company C. John was a WWII veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He later retired from the Ironton Dayton Malleable Iron Company, where he worked in maintenance. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Raceland, Kentucky. John also loved fishing and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Sue, John is survived by a daughter, Welhelmena “Willi” Foster, of Ironton; three sons, James Howard, of Florida, Harold Eagle, of Marion, and William Joseph, of Ironton, 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a constant companion, his poodle, Zoey.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two sons, David Smith and John Edward Smith II; three sisters, Mildred Vance, Faye Smith and Virginia Smith; and four brothers, Bill Smith, Howard Smith, Ray Haggard and James Smith.

A funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. James Wells officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in John’s honor to the Ashland Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.

Jeffrey Ferguson

Jeffrey Allen Ferguson, 60, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. The Ironton native was born July 27, 1956, a son of the late Harrison Ferguson Jr. and Barbara Hanners Williams.

Jeffrey attended Ironton High School and was employed through the State of Ohio, Division of the Blind, as a caterer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nick Ferguson and James E. Collins.

He is survived by a daughter, Kara Eckenrod, of Greenup, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Ian and Ethan; a brother, David Collins, of Ironton; his best friend, Debbie Schneider, of Ironton; two nephews, James Collins, of Ashland, and Chris Collins, of Ironton; his stepfather, James E. Williams, of Portsmouth; a good friend, John Pennington, of Ironton; and several cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be noon Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Pamela Smith

Pamela Sue Smith, 47, of Coal Grove, passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Ironton. Pam was born Sept. 19, 1968, in Ironton, a daughter to Isabell (Tackett) CareyWinters and the late James Carey. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Smith, Jr., whom she married Oct. 31, 2005.

Pam was a 1986 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and received her nursing degree from Rio Grande University. She was a nurse for Dr. Hazel Yang for 17 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was of the Christian faith.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by stepfather, Sherman Winters.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by two sons, Sean Stormes and Tyler Johnson, both of Coal Grove; brother, Jimmy (Angie) Carey, of Coal Grove; sister, Barbara Clay, of Coal Grove; multiple nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and a host of friends and family.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with Dr. Kevin Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and family and friends may visit 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. Anna Steed

Anna Marie Steed, 78, of Coal Grove, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 at Best Care Nursing Center in Wheelersburg. The Ironton native was born Sept. 13, 1938, a daughter of the late Edward and Bessie Harmon Large. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Steed, who passed away Jan. 12, 1997.

Mrs. Steed attended Dawson-Bryant High School and was a former waitress for Dave’s Sandwich Shop, SS Kresge’s and Kmart, retiring in 1994 after 34 years of service. She was a 66-year member of Zoar Missionary Baptist Church in Coal Grove.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph E. Large and Harold E. Large; and a sister, Isabel King.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Marie Schwartz, of Salt Point, New York; a grandson, Edward Gullett, of Coal Grove; three sisters, Rosa Willis and Fern Martin, both of Coal Grove, and Mary May, of Ironton; a brother, Donald Ray Large; of Ironton; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Zoar Cemetery with Dr. Kevin Willis officiating. There will be no public visitation and Phillips Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Charles Burns

Charles Burns, 89, of Willow Wood, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at home. He is survived by his wife, Teresa. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.
