Irene Dobson

Aug. 4, 1924 — Sept. 14, 2016

Sister Irene Dobson, 92, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minnesota, died at Assisi Heights on Sept. 14, 2016.
Gladys Irene Dobson was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Ironton, to the late Samuel and Mary Ann (Werne) Dobson. She entered the sisters of St. Francis in 1942 from St. Joseph Parish, Ironton.
Sister Irene made her first vows in 1945 and perpetual vows in 1948. She completed studies for a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the College of St. Teresa, Winona, Minnesota, in 1956 and a master’s degree in elementary education administration at Winona State University in 1963. She also studied theology through Aquinas Institute in Dubuque, Iowa.
She taught primary and junior high students for 30 years: Currie, Albert Lea, Tracy, Easton, Adrian and sleepy Eye in Minnesota, and in Ironton and Portsmouth. She provided music education and piano lessons. Sister Irene served as a hospital chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield, Wisconsin (1979-1984), and at St. Joseph Hospital and Mt. St Joseph Nursing Home in Concordia, Kansas (1984-1987). Sr. Irene moved to Assisi Heights in 1990 and was assistant organist until her retirement in 1996.
Sister Irene is survived by her Franciscan Community with whom she shared life for 74 years; her sister, Beatrice Gannon, of Ironton; nieces, Mary Ann (Butch) Kearns, Barb Gannon, Teresa Gannon and Sharon Gannon; nephews Tom (Kathie) Gannon, David (Mary Lou) Gannon; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Sep. 21 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes at Assisi Heights, Rochester. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Rochester.

Hurshell Salyers

Hurshell R. “Bulldog” Salyers Jr., 69, of Argillite, Kentucky, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne K. Harris Salyers. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Shawnee Church of God in Flatwoods, Kentucky, with pastor Jim Stamper officiating. Burial will follow in Old Fields Cemetery in Greenup County. Patriot Guard will be standing in honor and escorting to the final resting place. The visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Richard Levi Evans, 78, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. He is survived by his wife, Stella Evans. Ronald Duane Carter, 55, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Alice Blake Carter. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.

Larry Rist

Nov. 15, 1935 — Sept. 27, 2016

Larry Eugene Rist, 80, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center, Ashland. The Ironton native was born Nov. 15, 1935, to the late Harry Rist and Marjorie Dennin Rist White.
He was a graduate of IHS class of 1954. He served in the Army and was stationed in Worms, Germany, from 1958-1960. He retired from Ameritech after 39 years of service.
Larry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Miller Rist; four sons, Timothy (Pam) Rist, Michael (Pam) Rist, Daniel Rist, John (Shay) Rist; two daughters, Mary Pat (Chris) Monnig and Elaine (Travis) Easterling; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral mass will be at noon Friday at St. Joseph’s Church with Father David Huffman officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10:30 a.m. Friday until time of the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph Church or St. Joseph Catholic High School.

Leo Unger

March 18, 1923 — Sept. 27, 2016

Leo Unger, 93, of Ironton, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Kentucky. He was born March 18, 1923, in Ironton, the son of the late Charles J. and Mary F. Massie Unger.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the K of C Ironton and a WWII veteran serving in the Army Field Artillery Battalion B. He retired from C&O railroad.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eileen Scherer Unger; and children include one daughter, Linda (Mark) Decker; five sons, Tom (Pat) Unger, Jim Unger, Mark (Pat) Unger, John Unger, Paul (Susan) Unger; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by one brother, Charles Unger; and two sisters, Joan Moorman and Louis Farrand.
The family would like to recognize and give a special thanks to the staff at Oakmont Manor for their care of Leo. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Father David Huffman officiating. Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Dever Jr.

Robert J. Dever, Jr. (Bobby), 53, of Coal Grove, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Jane Bryant Dever. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with Reverend Lamar O’Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
