SOUTH POINT — Beat up but not beat down.
The Rock Hill Redmen overcame some injuries and scored 28 first half points en route to a 36-13 Ohio Valley Conference win over the South Point Pointers on Friday.
The Redmen were missing running back and defensive back Brady Knipp with an injury and fullback Trystan Matney sustained an injury during the game.
“We were a little beat up,” said Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp. “Offensively we moved the ball pretty well. Defensively we made stops when we had to. We just have to clean up our mistakes.”
The Pointers were playing their first game under interim head coach Chase Kratzenberg. Former head coach Chad Coffman reached a mutual agreement to resign earlier this week over what was termed a difference of direction with the South Point school board.
Coach Knipp said the midweek changed left his team in limbo.
“They changed everything so we weren’t sure what to expect. We had to adjust a lot of things on the fly,” said Knipp.
Rock Hill (5-1, 2-1) racked up 294 yards rushing on 53 attempts led by Trystan Matney with 105 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.
Logan Hankins added 97 yards on 18 attempts with a touchdown and quarterback Mason Darby rushed six times for 32 yards and was 3-of-6 passing for 56 yards.
Hankins caught two passes for 32 yards while Tanner Martin had one reception for 24 yards.
The Redmen finished with 350 total yards.
Matney put Rock Hill up 7-0 on the second play of the game with a 30-yard run. He also added the conversion.
The Redmen extended the lead to 14-0 when Hankins ran 14 yards for a touchdown.
South Point (0-6, 0-3) got on the scoreboard when Drew Adams returns an interception for a touchdown to make it 14-7.
But the Redmen answered with a pair of touchdowns to take a 28-7 lead.
Matney burst 10 yards for a score and then Darby scored on a 5-yard keeper.
Adams pounded his way into the end zone on a 1-yard run as South Point got within 28-13 at the half.
Rock Hill pushed the lead to 36-13 in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Darby.
Next Friday, Rock Hill hosts Ironton while South Point visits Fairland in league games.
