COAL GROVE — Now that’s what you call domination.
The Coal Grove Hornets amassed 519 total yards including 435 on the ground as they blasted the Gallipolis Blue Devils 67-13 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Tanner Henry ran 16 times for 112 yards and a touchdown to lead a balanced running game. Jacob Clark had 83 yards on just four carries and a score while Kimo Baldwin added 55 yards on six tries with a TD and Aaron Music led the backups with 59 yards on a three rushes and two touchdowns.
Hornets’ quarterback Matty Cordle was 6-of-10 passing for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Coal Grove limited Gallipolis to 140 total yards — 84 rushing and 56 passing.
Gallipolis (0-7, 0-4) was led by Justin McClelland with 56 yards rushing on 10 carries and he was 4-of-19 passing for 51 yards and a touchdown.
With the win Coal Grove improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the OVC. The Hornets travel to Ironton next Friday in a battle for first place in the league.
The Hornets began their domination from the opening kickoff. Litterally.
Daniel “Rudy” Rutherford returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and Jeb Jones’ conversion kick made it 7-0 just 12 seconds into the game.
Gallipolis tied the game as McClelland hit Cory Call with a 9-yard scoring strike and Ty Howell kicked the conversion. McClelland’s 42-yard run keyed the 59-yard drive.
But Coal Grove ran off 33 unanswered points and built a 40-13 halftime lead.
Clark ran 42 yards for a touchdown and Rutherford had a 1-yard scoring run to cap a 58-yard, seven-play drive that made it 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Cordle hit Dylan Malone with a 19-yard scoring pass to start the second quarter and open up a 27-7 lead with 9:45 on the clock.
Cordle threw a second TD pass only this time it was 40 yards to Rutherford that covered the bulk of the 42-yard drive.
Coal Grove went 60 yards in eight plays as Baldwin bulled into the end zone from 9 yards out and it was 40-7 with 2:03 left in the half.
The Blue Devils managed to score on a 3-yard pass form Cory Call to Colton Campbell with just 21 seconds left before the half.
It was all Coal Grove in the second half.
Henry carried all seven plays in a 44-yard drive including the final 4 yards to make it 46-13 and then the second unit finished the game.
Malone had a 24-yard scamper to set up Music’s a 1-yard scoring run and it was 53-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Gallipolis turned the ball over on downs on two straight possession and the Hornets scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Kyle Sites had a 3-yard TD run and Music broke loose on a 46-yard gallop.
Gallipolis hosts Rock Hill next Friday in a league game.
