The goal was to win. The cause was to help.
The St. Joseph Female Flyers took a straight sets win over the Boyd County Lady Lions in a volleyball game on Tuesday that was designated as a “Volley For A Cure” benefit match.
St. Joseph won in straight sets 25-12, 25-16, 25-18, but the game went beyond competition.
“It’s awesome to see two communities come together to support our efforts,” said St. Joseph coach Dwane Johnson. “We raise money to supplement deductibles at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Women’s Center Boutique.”
Alyson Johnson and Grace Miller led the Female Flyers on the service line with 10 and six aces, respectively.
Johnson also had six kills to lead the defense. Alex Holtzapfel, Ashley Bartrum and Miller got two each. Kelsey Malone racked up 20 digs.
St. Joseph hosts South Gallia at 6 p.m. on Monday in the Division IV sectional tournament.
“It was a good win heading into sectional play next week. Everything seemed to be clicking for us tonight,” said coach Johnson. “It definitely was a team effort for a worthwhile cause.”
Last year’s event raised enough funds to assist 16 cancer patients with purchases from the boutique.
The schools also played an exhibition set between the boys of each school and coached by the girls. St. Joseph won 25-14.
