Man arrested for assault with shovel

A Chesapeake man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a women with a shovel.

Following an investigation, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office located Marvin E. Sexton, 53, of 930 Township Road 229, on Saturday in Jefferson County. He was charged with second-degree felonious assault and is housed in the Jefferson County Jail pending an extradition hearing.

According to a press release from sheriff Jeff Lawless, the LCSO responded to the assault on Thursday in the 500 block of Rockwood Avenue in Chesapeake. Deputies arrived to find a 39-year-old female victim had be allegedly assaulted with a shovel. A family member who allegedly witnessed the assault identified Sexton.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition.

An investigation led detectives and agents with the FBI in Huntington to a residence in Wayne County, West Virginia. Sexton was not located at that residence but two people at the home were questioned, which led investigators to a home in Irondale.

“The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office would like to give a sincere thank you to all agencies that assisted in the case and ultimately bringing Marvin Sexton to justice,” Lawless said.

Agencies involved were the LCSO, Proctorville Police Department, Lawrence County EMS, FBI, West Virginia State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
