Julie Hall

Oct. 12, 1958 — Dec. 5, 2016

Julie Ann Hall, 58, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at her residence. The Ironton native was born Oct. 12, 1958, the daughter of Phillip Vernon Bowman Sr. and Reba Jean Backus Bowman, of South Point.
Julie was a 1976 graduate of South Point High School. She was a former employee of the American Legion Post 590 in Ironton and the South Point Giovanni’s.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Tamatha Maynard.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by husband, George William Hall Jr., of Coal Grove; son, Jeffery Backus, of Chesapeake; daughter, Georgia Backus, of Ironton; brother, Phillip Bowman Jr., of Coal Grove; brother, Donald Bowman, of South Point; sister, Carla Miller, of Ironton; and her beloved dog, Loulou.
Friends may call from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Haverhill Cemetery with Phillip Bowman III officiating.

David Lester

Feb. 28, 1939 — Dec. 1, 2016

David F. Lester 77, of Easley, South Carolina, formerly of Chesapeake, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 1, 2016, at home. Dave was born in Chesapeake on Feb. 28, 1939, to the late Abner H. and Corba E. Lester.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Edith, Wilma, Lisa, Anita and Sue; and three brothers, Abner Jr., Thomas and Daniel.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 56 years, Judy; one son, David (Janet) Lester Jr., of Clemson, South Carolina; and two granddaughters, Tracy and Christy Mae at home; one sister, Betty Shockley, of Huntington, West Virginia; one brother, Frederick (Linda) Lester, of Miller; and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
Dave was a long time member of the South Point Christian Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and served in various leadership positions. He also served as president of the South Point Village Council. Dave was a consummate professional in every aspect of his life. As a builder and land developer, he built homes throughout southern Ohio for many years, developed two subdivisions in South Point, and was named general contractor for the construction of a new motel in South Point. He later formed Franklin Mining Inc., which produced and shipped coal from eastern Kentucky and southern Indiana. In the late 1980s, he relocated to Sarasota Florida, where he purchased a blueprint and reprographic business from which he eventually retired in the 1990s. After retiring, Dave relocated to Easley, South Carolina to be near his granddaughters whom he absolutely adored.  Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, with pastor Jerry Greenslait officiating. Harold Johnson

April 1, 1935 — Dec. 6, 2016

Harold Edward Johnson, 81, of Crown City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at Heartland of Riverview, South Point. He was born April 1, 1935, in Chesapeake, the son of the late Lyle Edward and Mary Maxine Goodall Johnson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Verna Jo Hanshaw Johnson; and a son, Chris Edward Johnson. Harold, along with his father, owned and operated Johnson’s Used Cars for many years. He was a former investigator for the Prosecuting Attorney’s office and was currently an appraiser for Meyers, Neville and Baker. Harold loved his farm and horses and was very fortunate to have a great group of men whom he considered friends, help him with the upkeep. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory Lyle and Teresa Johnson, of Proctorville; a sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Don Ransbottom, of Huntington, West Virginia; a grandson, Andrew Christopher Johnson, of South Point; a great-grandson, Brayden Christopher Johnson; two nieces, Lisa and Kristi; a nephew, Barry; and a host of cousins and friends.

Vincent Chapman

June 20, 1950 — Dec. 4, 2016

Vincent “Ray” Chapman, 66, of Ironton, formerly of Marion, died Sunday evening, Dec. 4, 2016, at the King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. On June 20, 1950, Ray was born in Marion, the son of the late Vincent and Leona (Huffman) Chapman.
A dedicated worker, Ray did foundry work, construction and roofing. For several years, he worked at United Roofing in Ashville, North Carolina. An avid fisherman, Ray loved to go fishing with his best friends, his brother, Steven, and his cousins, Ronnie and Bobby. They were inseparable. As a family, they all looked forward to their yearly trip to Lake Erie, to catch, cook and eat as much fish as possible. Always there for his family, Ray loved being there to help his beloved family in any way he could. He was a quiet, loving, good-hearted man, who will be missed.
He will be missed by his sisters, Viola (Don) Thompson, of Texas, and Carol Vanderhoff, of Marion; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Including his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Chapman; a half-brother; and three half-sisters.
His family will greet friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday at the Snyder Funeral Homes, GUNDER/HALL Chapel, 347 W. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will be observed there at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery. Earl Brammer

June 11, 1947 — Dec. 4, 2016

Earl “Richard” Brammer, 69, of Wheelersburg, unexpectedly passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Kentucky. The Ironton native was born June 11, 1947, the son of the late Donald and Frances Brumfield Brammer. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Milleson Brammer, whom he married on June 17, 1972.
Earl was a 1966 graduate of South Point High School and graduated from Ohio University. He was a schoolteacher and coach for Green Local Schools in Franklin Furnace, where he worked for 37 years and retired in 2006. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Wheelersburg. He also enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his grandkids and watching them play sports. He was a member of the Western Sun Masonic Lodge in Wheelersburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Brammer, Robert Brammer and David Brammer; and a niece, Renee Bazell.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shanna (Bill) Murphy, of Coal Grove; a son, Nathan (Katie) Brammer, of Wheelersburg; four granddaughters, Kaitlynn Murphy, of Chesapeake, Kasey Murphy, of Coal Grove, Kaleigh Murphy, of Coal Grove, and Natalie Brammer, of Wheelersburg; two grandsons, Eli Brammer, of Wheelersburg, and Kaden Murphy, of Coal Grove; great-grandson, Grayson Murphy, of Chesapeake; a brother, Custer Brammer, of South Point; and a sister, Louise Brammer, of Ironton.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Rase Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Leatherwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Feed the Students at First Church of Christ in Wheelersburg, Ohio. Charlotte Walker

Charlotte A. Walker, 77, of Willow Wood, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Autry Walker, Sr.
Funeral service will be noon Saturday at McDaniels Crossroads Church, 2600 Cadmus Road, Patriot, with the Rev. Mark Crawford and the Rev. David Henson officiating. James Neff

Dec. 9, 1938 — Dec. 6, 2016

James Grey Neff, 77, of Ironton, died on Dec. 6, 2016, at Community Hospice in Ashland, Kentucky. He was the husband to the late Elizabeth Neff. He was born Dec. 9, 1938, to the late Bus Akers and Clara Neff Akers.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from Ironton Intermet. He was preceded in death by children, Tammy Renee Neff and Jonathan Troy Neff. He is survived by his children Shawn Neff, Kathy Lemaster and James Brain Neff; and grandchildren, Tracy (Mike) Hanshaw, Scott Hanshaw, Brianna Neff, Brandon Neff, Katelyn Neff, Alexa Reed and Arron Reed.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home, Ironton. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Mike Triplett officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery section P.

John Bryant

John Paul Bryant, 62, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at his home in Conway, Arkansas. John was born and raised in Ironton, where he met and married his first love and wife of 42 years, Kathy Bolden Bryant. There they also raised two sons, Eric Bryant, of Little Rock, Arkansas, and the late Shawn Bryant. He was a graduate of Ohio University and spent 27 years in management for some of the top propane companies in the industry. His career led him and Kathy to spend several years in the Muskegon/Grand Haven, Michigan area. Upon retirement, they moved to Conway, Arkansas to be closer to his three beloved grandchildren.
John Paul is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Eric (Mandy); granddaughter, Brittany; grandsons, Anthony and Brody; and granddaughter, Charleigh Flanagan.
He is also survived by his sisters, Tammy Bolden (Don), Mary Ann Hunt and Kathy (Kitty) Smith; and his brothers, William and James Richard (Leesa).
He is preceded in death by his son, Shawn; mother, Gladys “Lucille;” father, Jack Jr.; and brothers, James “Jimmy” (Vietnam) and Gary.
His life was enriched by many relatives, friends and coworkers. He was a lifelong Baptist and an avid Buckeye Fan. He was a dedicated husband, father and Pappaw. A memorial service to honor the life of John will be 4:30 p.m. Friday at Gateway Baptist Church in Ironton.

Shirley Nottingham

Shirley Mae Nottingham, 80, of Proctorville, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.
