In the season of giving, many events aim to provide to those in need to make Christmas a little brighter.

And while some may view the annual Shop With a Cop event as simply a shopping spree, the goals are so much more.

Sure, the program does provide children the ability to go with a police officer from various Lawrence County agencies, but more importantly, the Shop With a Cop affords those children the chance to convey a positive outlook toward law enforcement that evolve as they grow up.

In a time when the divide between residents and law enforcement has been strained to an all-time high, this Shop With a Cop event looks to bridge that gap. In the end, our police officers are members of our community who look to keep us safe each day.

Are there occurrences around the country where issues have warranted some of these feelings? Sure.

But it is important not to let the apple spoil the bunch. A significant majority of law enforcement simply wants to protect us and go home safely to their family.

These events are a good way to show these kids just that while helping many in need each holiday season.
