SCIOTOVILLE — A road win is extra good. A road win with an opposing player scores 40 is a great win.
The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings overcame a 40-point scoring effort by Sciotoville East’s Shay Brown to beat the Lady Tartans 67-63 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Thursday.
“Any time you can go into East’s gym and get a win you know you’ve done a good job,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.
“We really didn’t do a bad job of defending Brown, but she just had a phenomenal game. She just didn’t seem to miss. Fortunately, our girls stepped up especially at the end with the game on the line and made the big plays.”
Symmes Valley was up 65-57 when Brown hit a 3-pointer. After the Lady Vikings failed to connect on a free throw, Brown hit another triple to cut the deficit to 65-63.
But Sierra Ross made free throws with five seconds left to seal the win. Ross was 3-of-4 over the final 40 seconds and the Lady Vikings were 7-of-8 down the stretch in the quarter.
“They put us at the line and we were able to step up and make the plays,” said Carpenter.
Payton Walsh ahd 28 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals to lead the Lady Vikings (5-3, 4-2). Jensyn Shepherd had 23 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Brown was 14-of-19 at the foul line as she scored 40 points for East. Payton Helpenstein added 16 points.
Shepherd and Walsh scored 6 points each in the first quarter as the Lady Vikings took a 16-10 lead.
Shepherd scored 7 more in the second quarter and the Lady Vikings led 26-22 at the half.
Walsh poured in 14 points in the third but East rallied to take a 45-43 lead.
Shepherd had 8 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Vikings outscored East 23-18 to get the win.
Symmes Valley visits Gallipolis on Monday.
