COAL GROVE — The Gallipolis Blue Angels decided to use a box-and-one on the Coal Grove Lady Hornets.
Emily Compliment got the one and the rest of the Lady Hornets got the box. But in the end, the Lady Hornets shredded the box and Compliment needed more than one to stop her.
Compliment finished with 16 points and the Lady Hornets used a team effort to beat the Blue Angles 54-33 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“The defense had us out of sorts on the defensive end early in the game and we were not recovering to the 3-point line,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.
“We made adjustments during the half and held them to 11 points in the second half. The whole team stepped up and was able to put in points when they pressured Compliment.”
Destiny Dolen put in plenty of points as she finished with 15. Lauren Crum had 9 points while Bailey McKnight and Kasey Murphy had 7 each
“Dolen and Crum displayed some amazing hustle during the game. McKnight did a great job of handling the ball. Murphy was fighting the flu bug and was vomiting during the second quarter and still came out and played well and rebounding,” said Roach.
Alex Barnes scored 11 points for Gallipolis (2-3, 0-3).
Dolen had 6 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 14-10 lead. Barnes had 6 points including a 3-pointer to keep Gallipolis close.
Barnes had 5 more points in the second quarter with Hunter Copley and Kimberly Edelmann each hitting a 3-pointer as the Blue Angels got within 22-21 at the half.
Crum and Compliment scored 4 points each in the second quarter.
Compliment had 7 points in the third quarter while McKnight and Crum added a 3-pointer in the third quarter.
Compliment and Murphy had 4 points each with Dolen scoring 6 points as Coal Grove outscored Gallipolis 16-6 in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Coal Grove visits River Valley on Monday.
