Chase Walters impressed coach Rex Cooksey with his offense. The St. Joseph Flyers impressed Cooksey with their defense.
The Flyers left quite an impression on their coach after beating the Green Bobcats 60-48 on Saturday.
Walters scored a game-high 27 points while the trio of Tre Neal, Isaac Whaley and Zach Roach took turns in guarding one of Green’s top offensive threats by holding Tanner Kimbler to 5 points.
“We had a really good team effort both offensively and defensively. We played good individual defense and good help defense. I was really pleased with the effort individually and as team,” said Cooksey.
“We’ve competed defensively all year. The kids did a good job of executing the game plan. I was pleased with the rebounding. Green is strong on the boards.”
The Flyers held a 28-16 rebound advantage. Zac McGraw grabbed 9 rebounds, Clay Willis 7, Walters 6 and Whaley 5.
McGraw also had 13 points and 4 assists for the Flyers (2-2). Whaley had 8 points and 4 assists.
Tayte Carver scored 23 points to lead Green while Zack Huffman scored 13.
“Carver’s a tough offensive player. He hit some tough shots,” said Cooksey.
Walters scored 8 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 13-10 lead.
Walters got 8 more points in the second quarter to offset 8 points by Carver as the Flyers took a 26-22 lead into the locker room at the break.
Walters scored another 8 points in the third quarter as St. Joseph extended its lead to 41-30.
Huffman had 8 points and Carver 7 points in the fourth quarter, but the Flyers were 9-of-16 from the foul line over the final 1:27 of the game.
McGraw got four straight rebounds and was fouled immediately. He responded by converting 5-of-8 free throws.
St. Joseph will now play Sciotoville East at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday in The Ironton Classic.
