Birthday parties are something common in our lives, but moving close to 100 years, we find the those occasions mean a lot more.

That is why Lawrence County’s 200th birthday Tuesday was a special milestone worthy of a magnificent celebration, and that was certainly the case through 2016.

The Lawrence County Bicentennial Committee and all those involved in planning and executing the wonderful events throughout the year to commemorate the county’s birthday should all be commended for their efforts.

We, as residents, are fortunate to have a special place to call home. Although times can get tough, the desire to join together for a goal has been commonplace since the county’s inception. This is especially true when so many who gave their time and effort to put these events on all year.

In a time when negativity is all around us, having something positive like a significant milestone should be highlighted and looked at as what can be accomplished when we all work together.

It is important to continue this work together to teach our future generations, who will be leading the events at the 300th birthday, the right direction and example.
