CHESAPEAKE — It was the great writer Mark Twain who once said, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”
This lesson in panic was brought to you by the Rock Hill Redwomen who kept their cool and held off the South Point Lady Pointers 47-43 in the semifinals of The Lady Peake Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.
Rock Hill (4-3) will play Chesapeake at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the tournament finals. South Point (4-43) faces Greenup County in the consolation game at 5:30.
South Point had a 35-34 lead after three quarters, but the Redwomen regained the lead and then made 7-of-10 free throws with under two minutes to play to secure the win.
“We didn’t panic at the end and we hit our free throws. That was big,” said Rock Hill coach Greg Damron.
Maddie Scott was 3-of-4, Anna Darby 2-of-2 and Taylor Hall and Samantha Stamper were each 1-of-2 at the line in the fourth quarter.
Darby finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Scott had 9 points and 7 rebounds while Hall grabbed 10 rebounds.
“We did a better job on the boards, we hit some shots and our bench gave us some contributions,” said Damron. “It was a team effort on both ends.”
“We got off to a great start and then stopped rotating on defense in the second quarter. Hall did a really good job defensively on Badgett and Stamper gave us some good minutes off the bench.”
Emilee Whitt and Kate Mundy scored 13 points each for South Point. Brooklyn Badgett added 8 points.
Jill Hairston and Scott scored 4 points each as Rock Hill took a 15-4 first quarter lead.
Whitt hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter to offset 6 points by Darby as the Lady Pointers got within 23-16 at the half.
Mundy had 5 points as the Lady Pointers rallied to take the lead at the end of the third quarter.
Rock Hill then outscored South Point 13-8 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
“Having 23 turnovers didn’t help us, but the kids just battled and found a way to win the game,” said Damron.
