PEDRO — Coach Sam Gue knew what he wanted his team to do starting the second half. The problem was, Oak Hill coach Norm Persin knew what he wanted his team to do.
The Oaks did more of what they wanted as the opened up a close game with a big third quarter en route to a 61-37 win over the Rock Hill Redmen on Friday.
“We stressed at halftime the importance of the first four minutes of the second half. We cut the lead to six, but then Oak Hill went on a 19-2 run to close out the quarter,” said Gue.
“I felt like we were able to get good looks offensively, but we were not nearly as solid on the defensive side of the ball as we’ve been. Oak Hill probably had a lot to do with that. Their guard play was very solid.”
Oak Hill (9-0) was led by Landon Carroll with 24 points. Mitchell Hale scored 15 points and Nolan Carroll added 10.
Mason Darby led the Redmen with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.
Oak Hill took a 21-11 first quarter lead as Landon Carroll scored 11 points and Hale added 8. Darby scored 6 points for the Redmen.
Rock Hill cut the deficit to 31-23 at halftime as Darby scored 5 points and Tyler Damron 4 more in the second quarter. Nolan Carroll got 5 points for the Oaks.
But then came the third quarter as the Oaks outscored the Redmen 19-4 to open up a 50-27 lead.
Gue played for Persin at Chesapeake and later began his coaching career under Persin’s tutelage.
“Clearly, I have a ton of respect for the job Coach Persin does with every team he coaches. You know what you’re up against,” said Gue. “I never question the effort of our kids. We just didn’t get it done tonight.”
