SOUTH POINT — After two sub-par performances, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers rebounded with a strong team effort.
Ironton shot well and played well defensively in a 61-34 Ohio Valley Conference win over the South Point Lady Pointers on Monday.
After a slow start by both teams, South Point’s Emilee Whitt hit a 3-point at the 3:30 mark to give the Lady Pointers their only of the game.
A steal a layup by Lexie Arden helped get Ironton going and it was 11-7 at the end of the first. The lead grew to 28-16 at the half.
Ironton’s defense forced 20 turnovers for the game and the defense was instrumental as the Lady Tigers outscored South Point 16-5 in the third quarter to open up a comfortable 44-21 cushion.
Sydney Webb was 9-of-13 from the field for 21 including 3-of-5 from the 3-point arc. Arden had a strong all-around game with 13 points, 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and four steals.
Alyssa Lewis added 12 points to the winning effort.
Whitt scored 11 points to pace South Point (5-6, 2-3). Brooklyn Badgett had eight rebounds.
Ironton (8-3, 5-1) shot 24-of-50 from the field for 48 percent. South Point was 13-of-50 for just 26 percent.
In league games on Thursday, Ironton hosts Coal Grove and South Point visits Rock Hill.
