PORTSMOUTH — A team of good shooters added another gun.
The Portsmouth Clay Panthers have a good shooting team and they proved it on Saturday with a 76-42 win over the St. Joseph Flyers.
To make matters worse for the Flyers’ defense, Nathanael Hinze scores 12 points in only his second game back from a broken arm to join three other players in double figures.
Coldan Gilliland scored 23 points, Cameron King 15 and Brody Riffe 10 to lead the Panthers (10-2) who made nine 3-pointers for the game.
“They have real good shooters. We had pretty good pressure but they shoot the ball better than any team we’ve played,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
Zac McGraw and Chase Walters scored 13 points each to pace St. Joseph (5-6).
Clay led 20-10 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 39-26 at the break.
St. Joseph cut the deficit to four points in the third quarter before Clay got hot again and built a 61-33 lead.
“We played pretty good in the first part of the third quarter and then they hit one of those runs,” said Cooksey.
St. Joseph visits Rock Hill on Tuesday.
