COAL GROVE — Whatever the South Point Pointers are doing, it’s working.
The Pointers had their usual up and down play on Tuesday and it produced a 54-45 Ohio Valle Conference win over the Coal Grove Hornets.
“It’s seems to me our M.O. We got the run we wanted and got a lead in the first quarter, but then we got complacent in the second quarter and then came out with a little more energy in the third quarter,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“Logan Wade played well and Elijah Adams did score a lot but he was doing a lot of things for us. It was a good team effort.”
Logan Wade had 12 points and six rebounds to lead the Pointers (9-5, 5-3). Tayshaun Fox scored 13 points and Elijah Adams had eight points and nine assists.
Coal Grove (6-8, 2-5) had three players in double figures as Jeb Jones, Jaylen McKenzie and Mark Sites all scored 10 points each.
Fox scored nine points in the first quarter as South Point jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead.
Jones was 4-of-6 from the foul line in the quarter for the Hornets.
South Point outscored Coal Grove 12-11 in the second quarter to lead 28-19 at the half. Evan Gannon came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer and score five points in the quarter for Coal Grove.
Adams hit a 3-pointer and Wade scored four points in the third quarter as South Point extended its lead to 40-27 lead.
The Pointers were 8-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to prevent a Coal Grove comeback.
Jones scored six points, McKenzie had five points and Jordan Case was 4-of-4 at the line in the fourth quarter for the Hornets.
South Point was 17-of-33 from the field for 52 percent. The Pointers were 16-of-21 from the foul line and the Hornets were 16-of-22.
On Friday, Coal Grove visits Portsmouth and South Point hosts Chesapeake.
