Michael Cartmell

Feb. 14, 1968 — Jan. 28, 2017

Michael Vernon Cartmell, 48, of Coal Grove, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Lawrence County native was born Feb. 14, 1968, the son of Jeanette Davis Cartmell of Coal Grove and the late Gary Robert Cartmell.
Mike was a 1986 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School in Coal Grove and loved all sports, but especially the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. Mike was the dining room manager at the McDonald’s in Ironton for 27 years where he was affectionately call “Boss” by many of the regulars and co-workers.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlene & the Rev. Vernon Davis, and Zola Holman.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Twila Cartmell, of Ironton; nieces and nephews, Joshua (Jessica) Cartmell, Amy (Eric) Ermie and Sarah Cartmell; great-nieces and nephews he was very proud of, Elijah and Abigail Ermie, and Grey Cartmell; a very special aunt and uncle, Vickie and Gary Christian; and cousins, Brian and Chastity Christian, Eric and Lindsay Christian and Kaylee and Addy Christian; and his two special puppies, Bella and Bailey that will miss him greatly
Mike’s family would like to thank two special people, Amber Watson and Chastity Christian, for helping take care of Mike at home these last two months. He loved you both dearly. Also a special thanks to Steve Cielec and McDonald’s for all they have done for Mike through the years. His McDonald’s family and friends meant the world to him. Due to Mike’s love of the Ohio State Buckeyes his family encourages friends to wear Ohio State Buckeye clothing to the service.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Eric Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery beside his father. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening and noon until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Clara Henry

Clara M. Easterling Henry, 81, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Ironton native was born July 9, 1935, a daughter of the late Everett and Myrtle Shope Easterling. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Henry, who passed away Nov. 1, 2010; and her daughter, Debra Sue Shannon, who passed away June 29, 1986.
Mrs. Henry was a graduate of Ironton High School and was a former EKG technician for the Lawrence County General Hospital, retiring in 1994 after 25 years of service. She was also a former employee of the Ohio Bell Telephone Company and a former Senior Companion for the CAO. She was a very caring and loving mother and nanny who enjoyed shopping and loved to cook. She was a member of the Family Life Worship Center in Ironton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Ashurst, Thelma Spurlock and Norma Dodson; and two brothers, Harry Junior Easterling and Gene Easterling.
She will be missed dearly by her daughter, Vickie Henry-Delawder, who was her best friend; four sisters, Kay (Ted) Vanhorn, Patty (Paul) West, Margie Stewart and Beverly Taylor; three brothers, Bobby Easterling, John (Debbie) Easterling and Terry Minard; a special brother-in-law, Roger Dodson; six grandchildren, Jennifer Shannon, Jessica Shannon-Bandy, Jerrica Delawder, Jeleesa Stewart, John Delawder and Justin Delawder; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Kenneth Willis.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Todd Munson officiating. Gregory Keller

Harriette Baker

April 3, 1955 — Jan. 23, 2017

Harriette “Pixy” Ellen (Hastings) Baker, 61, of Dayton, left this earth on Jan. 23, 2017. Pixy was born on April 3, 1955, in Ironton, and was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon “Pete” and Winona “Winnie” Hastings of Coal Grove.
She attended Dawson-Bryant High School, class of 1972.
She’s survived by her husband, James Baker, of Dayton; son, Charlie (Terri) Bradley, of Pomeroy; daughter, Cory Shea (Tim Fulton) Williams, of Columbus; son, Roger (Kimmie) Williams, of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Shaylin Bradley, Lane, Lydia, and Charleigh Williams, and Piper Shea Fulton; great-grandchildren Adalin and Xavier; and many close friends and loved ones. A celebration of life will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturdy at Pathfinders, 511 Marion Pike, Coal Grove.

Susan Harmon

Dec. 11, 1953 — Jan. 28, 2017

Susan L. Harmon, 63, of Tiffin, passed away on Saturday morning, Jan. 28, 2017, at her home. She was born on Dec. 11, 1953, in Portsmouth, to Donald and Helen (Riggs) Rockwell. On Feb.14, 1978, she married Randy V. Harmon.
Survivors include her husband, Randy of Tiffin; daughters, Jennifer Cummings and Terri Cummings, both of Tiffin; stepsons, Aaron (Jennifer) Harmon, of Rossford, and Andrew (Dena) Harmon, of Florida; sister, Sandra (Edward) Rawlins, of Canton; nine grandchildren, Victoria and Isabella Cummings, Olivia, Brice and Camille Harmon, and Ellie, Brayden, Drew and Anthony Harmon; and niece, Amy (B.J.) Hershberger, of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; niece, Laura Rawlins; and infant stepdaughter, Carrie Harmon.
Susan worked in accounting for over 35 years at Marathon Oil in Findlay. She enjoyed vacationing in the Smokey Mountains, reading, spending time with her grandchildren and she loved her animals, donating to many pet charities.
There will be no visitation and private services will be at Locust Grove Cemetery. Robert Whaley

Feb. 3, 1925 — Jan. 25, 2017

Robert F. Whaley, 91, of Proctorville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. Mr. Whaley was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Russell, Kentucky, a son to the late Ray and Minnie “Cablish” Whaley.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth Jean (Fannin) Whaley, whom he married Nov. 1, 1947.
Mr. Whaley was a 1942 graduate of Ironton High School. He was a United States Navy Veteran, serving in World War II. Mr. Whaley retired from CSX Transportation Company in 1986 after 45 years of service. He was a member of  First Baptist Church in Ironton and the BPOE #177.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Emmerson Whaley, Ray Whaley and Thomas Whaley; and two sisters, Evelyn Higgins and Marjorie Johnson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judith (Servando) Paredes, of Walbridge, and Barbara (Joe) Wesney, of Dublin; son, James (Judy) Whaley, of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada; seven grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Makowski, of Northwood, Brian (Jackie) Makowski, of Findley, Janea Makowski, of Wallbridge, Amanda (Jeremy) Kimble, of Edmonton, Canada, Sara Whaley, of Prince Rupert, B.C., Elizabeth Whaley, of Edmonton, Canada, and Christina Wesney, of Dublin; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who will mourn his passing.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. Eric Barnes officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rights by the V.F.W. Post 8850 and visitation will be noon until time of the service at the funeral home. Bonnie West

Dec. 15, 1937 — Jan. 28, 2017

Bonnie D. West, 79, of South Point, passed away Jan. 28, 2017, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point.
She was born Dec. 15, 1937, in Goody, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Ervin and Mary Edith McCoy Staton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Summers.
Bonnie was a charter member of First Southern Baptist Church, where she was the organist for many years. She served her church and her Lord faithfully all her life. She is survived by her husband, Ronald West; two children, Danny L. (Billie) West, of Louisa, Kentucky, and Dale (Sandi) West, of South Point; a sister, Sylvia Bailey, of South Point; seven grandchildren, Casey West, Lauren Summers, Joel West, Rachel Patton, Christy Curnutte, Angel Derifield and Nicole West Terry; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church, South Point, with pastor Paul Michael Booth officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Vivian Carter

Vivian C. Carter, 90, of South Point, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Heartland of Riverview, South Point. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, with a funeral service at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point, by Minister Clyde Carter. George Martin Jr.

George Martin, Jr., 86, of Proctorville, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Cleo Hughes Martin.
