Go Red For Women was established by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a network of women dedicated to education, support, and research. Since then, the AHA has educated millions of women on the dangers of heart disease, and made major changes in health care. In 2003, the AHA and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute took action against a disease that was claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year. They created National Wear Red Day which has taken place on the first Friday in February every year to raise awareness about heart disease being the number one killer of women.
