Lady Vikings can’t overcome Clay’s 3-point shooting

PORTSMOUTH — Shooting well from behind the arc put the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings behind the 8-ball.
The Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers hit 11 3-point goals as they edged the Lady Vikings 60-57 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Thursday.
“We played well and we played hard, they just shot the eyes out of it,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter whose team was playing its fifth game in eight days.
Jensyn Shepherd scored 23 points to lead the Lady Vikings (15-6, 9-4). Kaitlyn Crabtree scored 11 and Sierra Ross had 10.
Shepherd has 12 rebounds, Crabtree 11, Payton Walsh nine and Ross eight. Kassie Baldwin had six assists and Ross five. Crabtree and Baldwin each had three steals.
Portsmouth Clay (14-8, 9-5) was led by Cammie DeLotell with 24 points including six 3-pointers. Jensen Warnock scored 16.
DeLotell had seven rebounds while Warnock had five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Shepherd scored eight points while Ross and Rachael Hayes each hit 3-pointers to give the Lady Vikings an 18-10 first quarter lead.
Warnock had seven points, DeLotell five and Regan Osborn four as Clay got within 30-26 at the half.
DeLotell hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points as Clay outscored Symmes Valley 22-14 in the third quarter to take a 48-44 lead.
Five different players scored in the quarter for the Lady Vikings with Ross and Crabtree getting four each.
Delanie Gilliland hit a pair of 3-pointers and Clay was 4-of-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Shepherd scored nine points for the Lady Vikings.
Symmes Valley hosts New Boston on Monday.
