Flyers fall to Clay

Shooting wasn’t the problem for the St. Joseph Flyers, but the number of shots were.
Shooting was no problem for the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.
The Flyers shot 42 percent but had only 36 attempts due to 20 turnovers and lost 79-38 to Clay on Saturday night.
“We didn’t play well. We had a lot of turnovers and we didn’t get a lot of shots. They weren’t a good match-up for us. They played well and they were able to answer anything we did,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
Clay (19-2) racked up the points as four players scored in double figures led by Nate Hinze with 26 points. Cameron King scored 15, Cole Gilliland 11 and Anthony Williams 10.
St. Joseph (9-11) was led by Zac McGraw with 14 points and Clay Willis added 10. McGraw grabbed six rebounds and Chase Walters had five before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers raced to a 9-1 start and led 19-5 at the end of the quarter as Hinze scored seven points and Gilliland had six.
McGraw scored six points while Willis and Walters got five points each as St. Joseph outscored Clay 16-15 in the second quarter. Gilliland and Williams scored five each for Clay.
The Panthers opened up a 54-29 lead after three quarters as King scored nine points. Wills had five points and he and Isaac Whaley each hit 3-pointers.
McGraw scored six more points in the fourth quarter for the Flyers but Hinze erupted for 17 points including three 3-pointers.
St. Joseph hosts Rock Hill on Wednesday.
