It was senior night for the St. Joseph Flyers, so seniors Zac McGraw and Peyton Adkins decided to celebrate in their own special way.
McGraw and Adkins combined for 33 points and 12 rebounds as the Flyers downed the Symmes Valley Vikings 60-49 on Saturday.
St. Joseph coach Rex Cooksey started all five of the team’s seniors that included Isaac Walker, Tre Neal and Joey Bush along with McGraw and Adkins and all five had a hand in the win.
“From first practice when I met kids, we dedicated the season to the seniors,” said Cooksey. “They all played well. I was happy for all of them. They worked hard they were great leaders and set a great example for future kids.”
McGraw had 19 points, six rebounds and five assists while Adkins got 14 points and six rebounds.
Isaac Whaley added 13 points and Clay Willis had five rebounds and three assists as the Flyers finished the regular season 10-12.
Chayden Renfroe scored 10 points to lead the Vikings (7-14). Jordan Lucas and Sam Angelo added eight points each.
St. Joseph shot 16-of-31 from the field for 52 percent including 12-of-18 from 2-point range for 67 percent.
“We did a good job moving the ball, setting screens and finding the open man. Our kids have been very unselfish all season,” said Cooksey.
Adkins scored seven points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 16-10 lead. Lucas had five points for the Vikings.
Chase Walters and McGraw scored four points each in the second quarter while Angelo had four points for the Vikings and it was 27-21 at the break.
Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter and it was 40-34. McGraw had eight points for the Flyers and Jarod Sheppard got four points for the Vikings.
The Vikings began to foul in the fourth quarter in an attempt to get back in the game, but the Flyers foiled the strategy by converting 14-of-21 free throws.
Whaley went 7-of-9 from the line while Adkins and Willis were both 3-of-4.
Both teams will play in the Div. IV sectional tournament at Meigs High School. St. Joseph plays Federal Hocking at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Symmes Valley faces Miller at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
