Become an organ donor

Organ and tissue donation is a concept that can stir a spirited debate between two people. However, donation of one’s organs or tissue is something that can potentially save the lives of eight people, which could include family, friends or total strangers.

Many times, we think only about the organs being donated, but things like tissue and cornea can also be transplanted. Each of these transplants do not always take. But the fact that so many citizens are willing to afford someone else the ability to live is one of the most unselfish things someone can do.

According to organdonor.gov, in the United States, over 130 million people are registered to be donors. But astonishingly, the waiting list for residents needing a transplant has grown rapidly in the last decade to 119,000 men, women and children in 2016.

This translates to an average of 22 deaths per day of people who are waiting for transplants, but ultimately don’t receive the needed organ or tissue transfer because of the lack of availability of suitable donations.

Ultimately, it only takes a couple of minutes to register, but this can lead to a person having the ability to continue to live a full life.
