Panthers rally to slip past Dragons, 9-8

CHESAPEAKE — It took two days and two pitches.
The Chesapeake Panthers and Fairland Dragons games was called due to darkness in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday.
Chesapeake was down 8-7 when the game was called but the bases were loaded. When play resumed on Thursday, Zach Wright hit the second pitch for a two-run single that gave the Panthers a 9-8 Ohio Valley Conference win.
“I’ve never been in that situation before, but I’ll take a win any way we can get it,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
Fairland trailed 6-3 going into the seventh and scored five runs on just one hit.
Dairus Stapleton walked, Zach Crawford singled, Eli Bowen walked, Reilly Sowards was hit by a pitch, Dylan Raines reached on an error, Garrett Looney squeezed in a run and reached safely on the play and Jace Vonville hit a sacrifice fly.
Chesapeake (5-4, 2-3) rallied in the bottom of the inning as Evan Burcham tripled and Dalton Nida singled him home and it was 8-7.
Austin Browning walked, Bretton Martin walked and then Wright had his game-winning hit.
The Panthers got a run in the first when Casey McComas walked, stole second, moved up on a fly out and Dalton Nida squeezed him home.
The lead went to 3-0 in the second.
Wright doubled, Jamey Mills reached on an outfield error for a run, Kelton Jones walked and McComas walked to force in a run.
Fairland got a run in the third when Looney walked, Tayton Hunt had an infield hit and Looney scored on an error.
Both teams scored two runs in the fifth.
Vonville bunted for a hit, Tucker Adkins singled and Stapleton singled for two runs.
McComas doubled, went to third on an error and scored when Burcham grounded out. Browning singled, stole second and third and Garrett Blake had an RBI single.
The Panthers added a run in the sixth when Wright, Tyler Eddy and Mills all walked and Jones hit a sacrifice fly.
On Friday, Chesapeake visits Coal Grove and Fairland hosts South Point.
