COAL GROVE — Defensive practice will begin…now.

After committing nine errors that led to nine unearned runs, Chesapeake Lady Panthers’ coach Aaron Rice may want to call a special practice just for the purpose of practicing defense after a 10-8 Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Coal Grove Lady Hornets on Friday.

“We had to earn our runs and we gave them most of theirs. You’re not going to win a game making nine errors,” said Rice.

Chesapeake went up 1-0 in the top of the first when Ryleigh Swann walked, Katy Spears doubled and Brooke Webb grounded out for the RBI.

Coal Grove tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Lauren Meyer had a bunt single, stole second and scored on a hit by Kasey Murphy.

The Lady Hornets got three unearned runs in the third.

Meyer reached on an error and Riley and Murphy singled. With two outs, Mckenzie Moore walked and Ali Waller had a two-run single.

Chesapeake cut the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth when Spears singled and Webb cranked a long home run.

But Coal Grove scored six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Waller was safe on an error, Khylee Keaton singled, and after a pop out Meyer reached on an error.

Riley doubled home two runs and Murphy smacked a home run. Lauren Crum was safe on an error and Amaya Waulk doubled her home.

But the Lady Panthers refused to quit and scored five times in the seventh.

With two outs, Ashley Tackett and Swann singled and Spears doubled for a run. Webb then unloaded another bomb and it was 10-7.

Jordan Storms then doubled and Lyric Bair singled her home. But Murphy struck out the next batter to end Chesapeake’s comeback hopes.

Murphy swung the big bat for Coal Grove as she went 4-4 with a home run. Keaton was 2-4 with a double and Riley was also 2-4 as each team had 11 hits.

Webb finished the game 2-4 with two home runs and six RBI. Spears was 3-4 with two doubles and Swann 2-3.

On Monday, Chesapeake hosts South Point and Coal Grove entertains Rock Hill.
