SOUTH POINT — Get ‘em on, get ‘em over, get ‘em in.
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers got runners on and got them over but they can still do a better job with getting them to score.
But with Brooke Webb pitching a five-hitter including 11 strikeouts and no walks, the Lady Panthers scored enough as they edged the South Point Lady Pointers 6-5 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“We played pretty well. We hit but we left a lot of runners on base. We left someone on base in every inning but the first,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Aaron Rice.
“Webb threw a good game. Anytime you strike out 11 and don’t walk a batter that’s a pretty good ratio.”
Chesapeake had nine hits with Jordan Storms doing the most damage. She was 2-3 with a home run and four runs batted in. Jenny Mills was 2-4.
Sara Allen was 2-4 and Hannah Adkins homered for the Lady Pointers.
Each team got a run in the second inning.
Storms walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a hit by Mills and the Lady Panthers led 1-0.
The Lady Pointers run scored when Abby Hannah was hit by a pitch, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on another fielder’s choice.
Chesapeake took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the top of the third.
Ashley Tackett walked, Ryleigh Swann was safe on a fielder’s choice and Katy Sparks bunt single loaded the bases. Webb hit a sacrifice fly and then Storms unloaded a three-run homer.
South Point answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Allen singled, Sophie Morrison was safe on an error, both moved up on a ground out and then a missed third strike scored Allen. Kiona Conwell singled for a run and a fielder’s choice scored the third run.
Chesapeake scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth.
Swann singled to start the inning, Spears hit into a force out, Webb walked and Storms delivered an RBI single.
The Lady Pointers got a run in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out solo home run by Adkins, but Webb got a strikeout and pop out to end the game.
Chesapeake hosts Portsmouth on Friday and South Point entertains Portsmouth on Monday.
