Lady Tigers get big win, take OVC lead

In a showdown for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers decided to put on a show.

The Lady Tigers collected 17 hits and downed the Rock Hill Redwomen 12-4 on Friday.

Aley Carmon went 3-4 with a double and two runs batted in and Haylee Stevens was 3-5 with a double and two RBI for Ironton.

But there was plenty of offense in the rest of the lineup.

Taiya Hamlet was 2-4 with a triple and two RBI, Ruth Paholsky was 2-3 with an RBI, M’Kenzie McMaster 2-4 with a double and two RBI, Peighton Rowe 2-4 with a double and RBI and Demi Sands was 2-4.

“I’m so proud of our team effort tonight. The girls are coming together and playing as a team at the right time,” said Ironton coach Missy Fields. “We hit the ball well and connected the hits to produce runs.”

Mary Beth Burton got the win as she struck out four and walked one.

“Burton had a super game in the circle tonight. We played great defense behind her. Rock Hill is a good hitting team,” said Fields. “The team is excited to see their hard work getting positive results. I love their enthusiasm for the game.”

Rock Hill banged out 10 hits as Rileigh Morris was 3-4 with a home run and two RBI and six other batters had a hit.

Ironton took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Stevens singled, Kenzie Cremeens was safe on an error, Carmon singled, Paholsky reached on catcher’s interference and McMaster doubled.

Rock Hill got two runs in the second as Baylie Harrah singled, Madison Harper doubled for a run and Kelsey Olderham and Morris singled.

The Redwomen (12-7, 9-4) tied the game in the top of the third when Anna Darby singled, Samantha Stamper put down a sacrifice, Harrah walked and Harper had an RBI single.

But Ironton took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when McMaster singled and Burton reached on an error.

The Lady Tigers got three runs in the fourth.

Sands singled, moved up on a ground out, Hamlet singled in a run, stole second and scored on a double by Carmon. Paholsky followed with an RBI single.

Ironton rallied for five runs in the fifth.

Burton singled and Rowe doubled her home. Sands singled and Stevens had an RBI double. Hamlet, Carmon and Paholsky all followed with singles.

Rock Hill got its final run in the sixth on a solo home run by Morris.

Ironton is at Portsmouth on Monday, hosts Portsmouth Notre Dame on Tuesday and Greenup on Wednesday and travels to Portsmouth West on Thursday.

Rock Hill is at Gallipolis on Monday, hosts Boyd County on Tuesday and Huntington Ross on Thursday.
