Redmen top Huntsmen, 3-2

PORTSMOUTH — This was some kind of split.

The Rock Hill Redmen split their two games on Saturday at the Portsmouth Notre Dame Wooden Bat Classic, and both games were decided in an unusual fashion.

With time constraints on the games, Rock Hill went to extra innings in both games and was involved in the international rule for extra innings that places the last out of the previous inning on second base.

The Redmen lost 3-2 to South Point in nine innings but came back to beat the Chillicothe Ross Huntsmen 3-2 in eight innings.

“We got good pitching in both games. We won one game by that rule and we lost one. It’s a crazy way to split a doubleheader,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.

In the eighth inning, Landon Smith was placed on second, stole third and scored on a hit by Kaleb Kidd.

The run also made a winner of Nick Blankenship who went the distance and pitched a four-hitter. He struck out four and walked two.

“He pitched well. I can’t say enough about his effort,” said Litteral.

Rock Hill’s Mason Darby doubled to start the game, went to third on an infield hit by Logan Hankins and scored on Kidd’s base hit.

Ross tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Brian Smith, a stolen base and Hunter Henneberger’s base hit.

The Redmen (13-6) went up 2-1 in the second.

Seth Nichols and Ethan McClaskey both walked, Gavin Jenkins put down a sacrifice and Darby grounded out to score Nichols.

The Huntsmen tied the game in the third when Logan Shope walked, Smith reached on an error, Seth Beeler sacrificed the runners up a base and Elijah McCloskey grounded out for an RBI.

Kidd went 3-4 with two RBI and Darby 2-4 with an RBI.

In the Division III sectional tournament, Rock Hill hosts Crooksville at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
