Norman Humphrey

Sept. 15, 1933 — Sept. 19, 2017

Norman Ray Humphrey, 84, of Kitts Hill, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at the Emogene Dolin Hospice House in Huntington, West Virginia, surrounded by his wife and closest family members.
The Lawrence County native was born Sept. 15, 1933, the son of the late Edward Earl Humphrey and Edna L. Yates Humphrey. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn “Ann” Massie Humphrey.
Mr. Humphrey was a graduate of Windsor High School and Huntington Barber College, as well as a United States Army veteran. He went to work as a teenager at a Detroit auto plant. He retired in 1989 from C&O Railroad, where he worked for 38 years. He owned and operated Humphrey and Sons Saw Mill and Logging, was a barber and farmed and drilled wells on the side.
Norman also volunteered for those in need, using his barber skills, knowledge of mechanics and manual labor, which he was never afraid of. Norman was a hardworking, generous man, dedicated to his family. He was of the Missionary Baptist faith and a member of the Windsor Grange.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Dean Humphrey.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca (Brent) Mannon, of Kitts Hill; two sons, Wallace (Karen) Humphrey and Norman Ray (Hazel) Humphrey II, both of Willow Wood; two brothers, Neal (Vernie) Humphrey, of Coal Grove, and Jerry Humphrey, of Ironton; sister, Phyllis Christian, of Ironton; grandchildren, Amanda, Mike, Ada, Forrest, Beau, Jaydon and Addyson Humphrey, Kelli Jenkins and Lori and Nick Mannon; and great-grandchildren, Landon and Maya Humphrey, Keegan and Knox Clay, Megan Saunders, Alexa and Cameron Porter, Allie Mannon, and Davie, Whyatt, Waylon and Ruger Mannon.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Justin Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Myrtle Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

Nancy Darlene Sowards, 52, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Charlie Langdon. Burial will follow in Pete Meadows Cemetery, Glenwood, West Virginia. Brother Wayne D. Brammer, 81, of Barboursville, West Virginia, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Brammer.
